Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of Just Now Therapy. I understand that starting therapy, especially online therapy, can come with a lot of questions and concerns. This section is designed to provide clear, straightforward answers to some of the most common inquiries I receive about mental health counseling, online therapy, and what you can expect when working with a licensed therapist. Whether you're curious about how online therapy works, what to expect in your first session, or how to navigate insurance coverage, you'll find the information you need here. My goal is to make your journey toward better mental health as smooth and informed as possible.

Common Questions

  1. What is online therapy, and how does it work?
Online therapy, also known as virtual therapy, telehealth therapy, or teletherapy, allows you to receive mental health counseling through video sessions, connecting with a licensed therapist from the comfort of your home. It’s just like in-person therapy, but with the added benefit of being able to attend in your pajamas (no judgment here!).
  2. How do I know if online therapy is right for me?
If you have a reliable internet connection, a private space to talk, and the motivation for self-improvement, then online therapy could be a perfect fit for you. If you’re still unsure, give it a try—you might find it’s even better than in-person sessions!
  3. What types of issues can be addressed in therapy?
Therapy can address just about anything related to self-improvement. Whether it’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, or life situations, it’s all fair game. Check out my Specialties page for a detailed list of common issues, but don’t hesitate to bring up anything else—I've got a well of information at your disposal!
  4. How often should I attend therapy sessions?
That’s up to you! Traditionally, people come once per week, but some prefer every other week or even monthly sessions. The more frequently we meet, the faster you’ll make progress, and as you improve, you can taper off how often we meet.

  1. What can I expect during my first session?
In your first session, we’ll dive into the reasons you’ve decided to come to therapy. I’ll ask a lot of questions to get a clear picture of your life up to this point—don’t worry, I’m just really interested in getting to know you! We’ll also discuss what you can expect from therapy. If I forget to cover something, we can always revisit it in future sessions.
  2. How long does therapy usually take to see results?
You might see results as early as the first session! Some clients feel a change right away, while others may need more time. It depends on what you’re working on and how much effort you put into it. Remember, therapy is a guide—it’s what you do between sessions that makes the difference.
  3. Can therapy sessions be customized to fit my schedule?
Absolutely! I offer sessions on the hour every weekday, with a range of morning and evening slots available. You can schedule sessions around your lunch break, after work, or whenever works best for you. Sessions are 53 minutes long, and it’s important to arrive on time and stay for the entire length. Some slots, like evenings, are more popular, so it’s wise to book in advance.
  4. What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?
If you’re not comfortable, it’s okay to switch therapists—therapy is about you! Not every therapist will be the right fit, but if you’ve tried several and still aren’t happy, consider giving one a few more sessions. Sometimes it takes time to build rapport and trust.

  1. What technology do I need for online therapy?
You’ll need a fast, reliable internet connection and a web browser for video. Using a laptop or tablet works best with HIPAA-compliant platforms. Make sure to use wired earphones or a headset for the best audio quality, and find a private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
  2. Is online therapy secure and confidential?
Yes, online therapy is secure and confidential. I use HIPAA-compliant video platforms, primarily Psychology Today’s “Sessions,” but also VSee Clinic and Google Meets as backups. Your privacy is of utmost importance to me, and I ensure that all your information is handled with the highest level of security.
  3. Can I do therapy if I’m out of state or on vacation?
It depends. Typically, you need to be in the state where I’m licensed (currently Pennsylvania, with California coming soon). However, some states are more flexible with telehealth, so it’s worth checking the specific regulations if you’ll be out of state.
  4. What payment options are available?
I accept both insurance and private pay. If you’re using insurance and I’m in-network, you might still owe a copay, deductible, or coinsurance. Payments can be made via Square using a credit card or HSA card.

  1. Does insurance cover online therapy?
Yes, most commercial insurance plans cover online therapy similarly to in-person therapy. Coverage varies, so you might have a copay, deductible, or coinsurance. I can check your insurance details and provide an estimate of your costs. I'm in-network with most PPO plans from the following insurance providers:
    • Aetna
    • Anthem | Elevance
    • Blue Cross / Blue Shield
    • Capital Blue Cross
    • Geisinger
    • Highmark
    • Humana
    • Optum
    • UnitedHealthcare UHC | UBH
  2. How much does therapy cost if I pay out of pocket?
My current rate is $160 per session. I typically increase my rates by $10 each year.
  3. Do you offer sliding scale fees?
Unfortunately, I don’t offer sliding scale fees. Therapy is an investment in your life and well-being, and my rates reflect the value of the services I provide. As I gain more experience and expertise, the demand for my services increases, making it a worthwhile investment in your future.
